Norm Black presenting award to May Peiluck
Manitoba Heritage Federation
The Manitoba Heritage Federation
held their annual awards dinner in
Dauphin on November 9 this year.
Helgi Austman and President of the
Icelandic National League, Laurence
Johnson were in attendance and accepted
two awards; one on behalf of Leo
Kristjanson who received the Interlake
Regional Volunteer Award and on behalf
of the Gimli Municipal Heritage
Committee who received the Heritage
Preservation Award for the restoration of
the Gimli Public School—1915.
On November 14th, Norm Black,
President of the Manitoba Heritage
Federation, attended a ceremony at the
school in Gimli where he was able to
present these awards directly to Leo and
to May Peiluck, Chairperson of the Gimli
Municipal Heritage Committee. Members

of the Heritage Committee and those who
volunteered some 25,000 hours to the
restoration project were among those in
attendance at this ceremony.
Another citation for Leo occurred
when the NAFTA and the New Rural
Economy Conference was held in
Gimli October 23-26. A delegate, Brett
Fairbairn, Professor of History at the
University of Saskatchewan, took this
opportunity to pay tribute to Leo for his
efforts in founding the research and
development in biotechnology, Centre at
the U. of S. called Innovation Place. In his
address, Brian Fairbaim told the group of
delegates from across North America, that
one of the greenhouse complexes at
Innovation Place was named for Leo. All
the delegates joined in a standing ovation,
giving recognition to Leo for his vision and
support in furthering the work in research
in the field of agriculture during his time
as President of the University of Sas-
katchewan.
On another note, The Gimli Heritage
Committee has now embarked on the task
of restoration of the old Unitarian Church
which was declared a heritage site by the
Town of Gimli. This restoration will
accommodate services for the church as
well as, theatre productions for both the
Gimli Theatre Association group of actors
and other performing groups visiting
Gimli. □
