Unforgettable
This story takes us back to 1938,
when I was emcee at the recital
of one Sarah (Sigurrós) Ander-
son, an Icelandic pianist. She had been a
pupil of Ragnar Ragnar (as had I, for a
few brief lessons) and on this occasion
she was presenting her pupils for their
exams. The piece in question was in the
syllabus that year — Souvenir — by
Franz Drdla. By an odd coincidence the
name “Drdla” equates with the Icelandic
word “drulla,” which translates into
English as “diarrhea.”
Most of Sarah’s pupils were
Lutherans including a number of German
students. I had to announce repeatedly
that “so-and-so” would play Souvenir by
Franz Drdla. Before long, the Icelandic
parents in the audience began to titter. I
was quite fluent in Icelandic myself
during those years and so I understood
the connotation.
This comic situation soon tumed to
annoyance with the German parents,
who failed to see what was so funny
about the word, and they were muttering
audibly. When the fifth German pupil in
a row had caused convulsions of
laughter, some of the irate adults got up
and left. Finally we got to the end of the
program and it was left to Sarah to
explain the situation and mollify the
Germans.
To further compound the problems of
this controversial recital, I had arranged
with a printer to do the programs and
every title page carried the words “Pain-
o Recital.” Again, it was too late to do
anything about it.
All of this took place on a cold winter’s
evening in Winnipeg and we came back to
my home on Langside Street for coffee. We
had barely got comfortable when the phone
rang and Mrs. Anderson bellowed,
“Sigurrós, come home! The house is on
fire!”
Indeed it was and, when we rushed
over to Maryland Street, the place was in
pandemonium. This was a musical
evening we would not soon forget.
