a result of dramatic volcanic activity.
The earliest settlers formed a society that
has survived on the edge of the Arctic and
gave birth to the famous Icelandic sagas
of the Viking settlers. This fascinating
introduction to Icelandic folklore, culture,
and literary heritage takes the Icelandic
thirteenth century Egil’s Saga as the main
focus. The program is based in the
picturesque peninsular town of Bor-
garnes, embedded in the spectacular
countryside which provided the setting
for many of Iceland’s best known
medieval Sagas, including Gunnlaug’s
Saga Ormstungu (the Saga of Gunnlaug
the serpent-tongued) as well as, of course,
Egil’s Saga.
Written in about 1230, probably by
Snorri Sturluson, Egil’s Saga offers a
panoramic view of the Viking world from
the middle of the ninth to the end of the
tenth century. The saga is dominated
