been raised to about 300 m. This is just tlie lieight of the highest base-level
recognizable in the topography and thus it appears that the raised base-levels
arc in all essentials the result ol' isostatic readjustinent, while absolute sea-level
may liave remained largely constant (apart from Pleistocene eustatic changes).
Having discussed details of the shelf it is concluded that the present plane
surface was formed in the late Pliocene or Early Pleistocene and that the
deeps on the shelf are river-eroded during eustatic fall of sea-level in the
early to middle Pleistocene, sea-level falling about 300 m below the present
shoreline. This fall of sea-level would reduce the distance to tlie Faeroes from
425 km to 280 km, and as some islands would probably have emerged in be-
tween these lands the longest distance over sea would have fallen to 135 km.
But no evidence is found of a real land bridge since Iceland becarne isolated
and the shelf began to form in the Upper Tertiary.

Um aðflutning íslenzku flórunnar
íslenzkar æðri jurtir eru flestar af evrópskum stofni og ber flór-
an keim af hinni köldu Atlantshafsveðráttu. Þó finnast hér nokkrar
hávestrænar jurtir, en aðrar eru svalviðrisjurtir, sem eru útbreiddar
víða um heimskautalöndin. Nokkuð hefur verið umdeilt, hvernig
flóran er til komin, hvort hún mun öll innflutt eftir ísöld eða
nokkrar jurtir hafi lifað hér á auðum svæðum alla ísöldina eða að
minnsta kosti síðasta hluta hennar.

Þorvaldur Thoroddsen (1911) aðhylltist helzt þá skoðun, að ter-
t.iera flóran, þ. e. flóran fyrir ísöld hafi dáið út, landið hafi verið
algjörlega ísi hulið og komið bert undan ísnum, og kvarlera flóran,
sú sem nú vex hér á landi, hai'i öll þurft að flytjast til landsins
eftir lok ísaldar.
Nú er álitið, að tvö eða fleiri hlýviðrisskeið hafi verið á ísöld,
á milli hinna miklu jökulskeiða. íshellan, setn þakti landið á þess-
