the first autumn term to limit the number on students who are accepted
(presently 15 in radiologicat science and 20 in biomedical science).
The BS degree with the addition of having completed the first year in the MS
programme is needed to obtain a licence from the Minister of Heatth to practice
as a radiotogical scientist, or a biomedical scientist in lceland. The MS degree and
a two-year working experience provide the holder with the necessary
requirements for a ticence as a specialist in biomedical science.
A two-year Master's programme (health sciences) is offered at the Medical
Facutty, as well as a five year Ph.D. programme.
Faculty of Nursing
The four-year Nursing programme at undergraduate level leads to a BS
degree. A competitive examination is held at the end of the first autumn
term.
Recently, it was ordained within the Facutly of Nursing that in order to
continue from the first semester of undergraduate study in nursing to the
second, a student must achieve a minimum average grade of 6.0. This
will take effect fall 2008.
The 105 students with the highest examination grades are offered to
continue their studies. A continuing 2 year programme in Midwifery is
offered to registered nurses leading to a Cand.Obstetricorum degree.
A 20 or 30-credit programme in various fields of specialized nursing is
also offered at the graduate levet, leading to a Diploma Certificate in
Specialized Nursing.
The Faculty of Nursing offers an MS programme. at the graduate level,
which requires additional 60 credits after completion of the BS degree.
MS students choose between a 15-credit clinical track with a research
project or an extensive 30-credit research project.
Additionally, the Faculty of Nursing offers a doctoral programme, which
is a 90 credit programme for those students who have completed an MS
degree in nursing or midwifery or a comparable degree.
Credist at the University of lceland amount to half the value of European
Credit Transfer System (ECTS credist)
Faculty of Science
The Faculty of Science is comprised of six departments: Biotogy, Chemistry,
Geosciences, Physics. Mathematics and Food Science. In the Chemistry
Department major programmes are avaitabte in Chemistry and Biochemistry. The
Geosciences Department offers major study in Geology. Geography and Tourism
Studies. Within the Physics Department, students can specialize in Theoretical
Physics, Applied Physics or Geophysics. Students in the Mathematics Department
can speciatize in Pure or Applied Mathematics.
Generalty, the programmes of study take three years to comptete and tead to a
B.S. degree. A thesis is required in Geotogy and Geography but is optional in the
other fields.
For students having compteted their B.S. degree. an M.S. programme is offered in
all departments. generally requiring two years of study. including course
instruction and thesis work. leading to an MS-degree (60 units) and an MPaed-
degree for qualification as a secondary-school teacher. Atl departments offer atso
a doctoral study (Ph.D.). The doctoral study is at least 90 credits after the M.S.
programme. If the doctoral programme is entered after the B.S. degree. it is at
least 120 credits. The thesis is at least 90 credits.
In addition. the Faculty of Science offers an interdisciplinary Masters Programme
in Environmentat Science Naturat Resource Management in cooperation with
other faculties.
