MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION IN THE VERY OLD, A RETROSPECTIVE

All autopsy records of persons aged 90 and older coming
to autopsy at the Department of Pathology at the Uni-
versity of Iceland in the years 1951-1980 were analysed.
The degree of coronary atherosclerosis and incidence of
ischemic changes in the myocardium were determined.
Included in the study were 74 males and 140 females.
The same changes were determined for a control group
aged 70 and younger.
The pathological changes with age and time during the
30 year period are analysed and discussed. The pattern
of myocardial infarcts deserve a special consideration
due to a significant change in incidence during the
observation period.
