46 CIMETIDINE AND NAPROSYN: NO INTERACTION Dunqal H., Kjeld M., Kristjansson F., Þjoðleifsson B. Landspitalinn - Medical Dep. - Reykjavik Introduction: Cimetidine has been reported to increase or prolong the action of several drugs when given simultaneously. This interaction is probably due to cimetidine's action on hepatic microsomal enzymes and on hepatic blood flow. Cimetidine and naprosyn are sometimes given together and it was therefore of interest to explore a possible interaction. Material and Methods: Ten healthy individuals participated in the study which had a crossover design. First, an oral dose of 500 mg Naprosyn was given and blood samples taken at a given time from 0 to 48 hrs. Two weeks later the same procedure was repeated but cimetidine ( 1000 mg/day ) was given 2 days prior to the test and on the test day. The following parameters were calculated and compared by a paired t test: Mean serum concentration, half life, area under the concentration curve and time to the p.feak concentration. Results: No difference of statistical significance was found. There was a trend towards a faster absorption with cimetidine. Conclusion: There seems to be no interaction of clinical significance between cimetidine and naprosyn.
