Send your listings to: listings@ grapevine.is Opening ASÍ Art Gallery TREASURES FROM THE COLLECTION Celebrating the centennial anniversary of the Icelandic Confederation of Labour (ASÍ), this exhibit features numerous pearls of nineteenth-century art, such as paintings by Ásgrímur Jónsson, Jón Stefánsson, Kjarval, and more. Opens March 5 Runs until April 3 Ekkisens ‘Artmess (2009-)’ by Katrín Inga Jónsdóttir Hjördísardóttir This show has been ongoing since 2009, and has travelled around the world, popping up in New York, Warsaw, and other art spaces around the world. There is a special artist talk on March 9 at 20:00. Runs March 6 at 15:00, March 9 at 20:00 and March 13 at 15:00. Gallerí Fold Pétur Gautur exhibits his paintings. Opens March 5 Runs until March 23 i8 Gallery ‘In the Genes’ by Sofia Hultén Swedish-born artist Sofia was raised in Birmingham, England, and is known for her postindustrial streak. Her new exhibit at i8 is a wordplay on “genes” and “jeans.” Opens March 17 Runs until April 30 Kópavogur Art Museum Gerðarsafn ‘Blind Date + The Collection’ Gerðarsafn owns about 4,250 works of art. This exhibit is an eclectic selection of some of these works, curated by Jón Proppé, Kristín Dagmar Jóhannesdóttir and Brynja Sveinsdóttir. There is a special opening party on March 5 at 15:00. Kópavogur Women’s Choir performs live at the same time the following day. Opens March 5 Runs until April 10 Living Art Museum (Nýló) ‘Double Bind – Reykjavík’ This group show has travelled the world since October, making its fifth and final stop in Reykjavík. It is comprised of works by nine different artists that all attempt to fail and show vulnerability in its various forms. There is a special opening party on March 5 at 15:00. Opens March 5 Runs until April 17 Museum of Design and Applied Art ‘TRIAD’ by Aníta Hirlekar, Bjarni Viðar Sigurðsson, & Helga Ragnhildur Mogensen This joint exhibit by fashion designer Aníta, ceramic artist Bjarni, and jeweler Helga offers guests the chance to see the interplay of the three disciplines in an exhibit that focuses on texture. Opens March 9 Runs until May 29 The National Museum of Iceland ‘Unionize! Icelandic confederation of Labour 1916 - 2016’ This exhibit celebrates the centennial anniversary of the Icelandic Confederation of Labour (ASÍ), one of Iceland’s longest- standing unions that has been at the forefront of labour disputes and improving workers’ rights. Opens March 5 Runs until May 22 Nordic House ‘Connecting Iceland!’ by Swedish Material Makers This group of eight artists are putting together an exhibit featuring glass, ceramic, textile and jewelery pieces. On March 11 there is a special artist talk with four presentations at 19:00. Opens March 9 Runs until March 13 Reykjavík Maritime Museum ‘The Willow Project’ Final year students of Product Design at the Iceland Academy of Arts come together to exhibit ‘The Willow Project’. The exhibition is part of Design March. Opens March 10 Runs until March 13 Reykjavík Art Museum: Ásmundarsafn ‘Disruption’ by Ásmundur Sveinsson & Elín Hansdóttir SKUGGA-BALDUR is a Czech-Icelandic theater project based on the novel Skugga- Baldur by the prominent Icelandic author, Sjón. The theater adapiton is written by the director, Kamila Polívková and the acctress Tera Hof. Runs March 4 at 20:00, 5 at 20:00, 6 at 18:00, 7 & 8 at 20:00 Spark Design Space ‘1+1+1’ by Hugdetta, Petra Lilja, & Aalto + Aalto This experimental design collaboration Gerðarsafn Hamraborg 4, Kópavogur | March 5 - April 10 | Admission: 500 ISK It’s tempting to imagine artwork coming alive in the storage rooms of museums where they are kept for years after having been exhibited. The title of this exhibit juxtaposes the connection that people make on a blind date with the connections that divergent art pieces form when presented together. The artworks are all from Gerðarsafn’s extensive collection—they come from various decades, and presented together give a fresh perspective on the Icelandic art scene.
