$ Með lögum nr. 87/1989 um breytingu á verkaskiptingu ríkis óg sveitarfélaga er kveðið á um að ríkið yfirtaki alfarið viðfangsefni sjúkratrygginga frá og með
1. janúar 1990. í kjölfarið voru sjúicrasamlögin lögð niður. Útgjöldin, sem þau áður báru eru nú færð undir sjúkratryggingar almannatrygginga að undan-
skildum skrifstofukostnaði, sem færður er með rekstrarkostnaði Tryggingastofnunar. According to legislation in 1989 (Act. No. 87/1989) the state took over
all health insurance functions as of 1 January 1990 and the municipal health insurance funds were discontinued. As a result health insurance expenditures
were transferred to the social security health insurance scheme exceptfor administration costs which became part ofthe over all administration costs of the
State Social Security Institute.
