I þessu riti birtast niðurstöður heildarúrvinnslu úr vinnu-
markaðskönnunum Hagstofu Islands árið 1998 ásamt
samanburðarefni fyrir árin 1991-1997. Utgáfa þessi hefur
tafist nokkuð vegna endurflokkunar á upplýsingum um
menntun frá 1996, sem nánar er gerð grein fyrir í kafla 9.
Hagstofa Islands hóf reglubundnar kannanir á vinnu-
markaðnum í apríl 1991. Tvisvar á ári er leitað símleiðis til
um 4.400 einstaklinga á aldrinum 16-74 ára sem valdir eru
af handahóft úr þjóðskrá og þeir spurðir um stöðu sína á
vinnumarkaði.
Skýrslan skiptist í níu kafla. Helstu niðurstöður eru fremst
í hverjum kafla en greinargerð um aðferðir, áreiðanleika og
hugtök er í kafla 9.
Ómar S. Harðarson og Lárus Blöndal höfðu umsjón með
þessari skýrslu og sömdu inngangskafla og greinargerð en
Sigurborg Steingrímsdóttir annaðist umbrot.
Við vinnumarkaðskannanirnar sextán, árin 1991-1998,
hafa 18.269 einstaklingar verið spurðir af 163 spyrlum.
Hagstofan kann öllu þessu fólki bestu þakkir fyrir ágætt
samstarf.

Preface
Statistics Iceland began conducting regular labour market
surveys in April 1991. Twice a year approximately 4,400
individuals who are selected at random from the National
Register of Persons are contacted by telephone and
interviewed about their employment status.
The present report contains an account of the results of
labour market surveys in the years 1991-1998 as well as
selected data from other sources concerning the labour
market in the same period. The report gives an account of the
sampling, participation, participants, procedure, processing
and results of these surveys. Ómar S. Harðarson and Lárus
Blöndal edited this publication. The present report has been
delayed somewhat because of the need to adapt information
on educational attainment 1996 onwards to arevised Icelandic
sdaptation to ISCED 75.
The preparation, implementation and processing of the
surveys was conducted exclusively by the staff of Statistics
Iceland. In the sixteen surveys conducted in 1991-1998
some 18,269 respondents were interviewed by some 163
interviewers. Statistics Iceland wishes to express its gratitude
to all these people for their excellent cooperation.
