Yfirlit
í þes sum kafla eru birtar töflur um starfandi fólk (16-7 4 ára).
Töfluframsetningin er í 11 undirköflum, þar sem starfandi
fólk er skoðað frá ýmsum hliðum, svo sem með tilliti til
menntunar, hjúskaparstéttar, atvinnustéttar, atvinnugreina,
vinnutíma, aukastarfa og fleira. Hér á eftir verður drepið á
nokkrar athyglisverðustu upplýsingamar sem fram koma í
kaflanum. Þá verður gerð grein fyrir helstu hugtökum og
aðferðum sem varða töflur í kaflanum.
Starfandi fólki fjölgaði um 11.000 manns 1991-1998 eða
úr 136.900 í 147.900. Milli áranna 1997 og 1998 fjölgaði
starfandi um 5.900. Á árunum 1991-1998 fækkaði starfandi
fólki utan höfuðborgarsvæðisins um 1.000 manns en fjölgaði
á höfuðborgarsvæðinu um 12.000. Frá 1991 hefur hlutfall
starfandi af mannfjöldanum verið hærra utan höfuðborgar-
svæðisins en á höfuðborgarsvæðinu. Utan höfuðborgar-
svæðisins voru 82,3% mannfjöldans starfandi árið 1998 en
78,6% á höfuðborgarsvæðinu.
Synopsis
This chapter presents tables about the employed (aged 16-
74). The tables are presented in nine sections which examine
the employed from various angles, such as education levels,
marital status, employment status, economic activity, working
hours, second job, etc. The following are some of the
highlights of that chapter. The principal concepts and methods
relating to the tables in this chapter are also outlined.
The number of employed increased by 11,000 over the
period 1991-98, from 136,900 to 147,900. Between the
years 1997 and 1998 there was an increase of 5,900 in the
number of people at work. Over the period 1991-98 there
was a decrease of 1,000 in the number of employed outside
the capital area, but an increase in the capital area of 12,000.
Outside the capital area 82.3 % of the population was employed
in 1998 compared with 78.6% in the capital area.

Á árunum 1991-1998 fjölgaði starfandi mest í þjónustu-
greinum, úr 87.400 í 97.900 manns eða um 12%. í iðnaði
fjölgaði um 1.800 manns á tímabilinu en í landbúnaði fækkaði
um 1.200 manns.
There was a growth of 12%, from 87,400 to 97,900, in the
number of employed in the service sector over the period
1991-1998. Over this period the number of employed persons
in industry increased by 1,800 but in agriculture and fishing
the number fell by 1,200 over this period.
