112 Atvinnuleysi 3. Atvinnuleysi 3. Unemployment Yfirlit I þessum kafla eru birtar töflur um atvinnulaust fólk. Synopsis This chapter presents tables about the unemployed. Tables are di vided into three sections. The fxrst presents unemployment as it is measured in the Statistics Iceland labour market surveys. Section two contains tables on registered unemployment. The third section comprises a single table comparing unemployment in Iceland with other OECD countries. The following is a description of some of the highlights of this chapter. The principle concepts and methodology relating to the tables in this chapter are also outlined. Unemploymentran at 2.7% in 1998, compared with 3.9% in 1997. This is equivalent to 4,200 people having been unemployed on average throughout the year, compared with 5,700 the previous year. Over the period 1991-1998 unemployment was proportionally highest in 1993-94, at 5.3%. Unemployment in 1998 was higher among women than men, with 2,300 women and 1,800 men without work. Unemployment was also proportionally higher among women than men, at 3.3% of the female labour force as against 2.3% of the male component. Unemployment in 1998 ran higher in the capital area than outside it, at 3.2% compared with 2.1%. Mynd 3.1 Atvinnuleysi 1991-1998 Figure 3.1 Unemployment rates 1991-1998 % ..... Karlar Males Konur Females Atvinnuleysi er nokkuð misskipt eftir aldri. Unemployment varies considerably according to age. Over the period 1991-1998 it has consistently been highest in the age group 16-24. Within this group the unemployment rate was 6% in 1998 compared with 7.7% the year before. There is also a difference in unemployment according to educational background. Unemployment is much higher among those who have only completed compulsory education, compared with those who are university-educated. In 1998 unemployment was 6.0% and less than 1%, respectively.
