Stéttarfélög eru félög launþega sem starfa samkvæmt
lögum um stéttarfélög og vinnudeilur og eru skráð hjá
Ríkissáttasemjara.
Fjöldi félagsmanna í stéttarfélögum í árslok 1991-
1998. Vegna skýrslugerðar um vinnumarkaðinn hefur
Hagstofan safnað skýrslum um fjölda félagsmanna í
stéttarfélögum 31. desember ár hvert frá 1991 eftir kyni og
tegund aðildar. Leitað er til heildarsamtaka og einstakra
stéttarfélaga utan heildarsamtaka. Ef ekki fást skriflegar,
sundurliðaðar upplýsingar er fjöldi félagsmanna áætlaður í
samráði við forsvarsmenn viðkomandi sambanda eða
stéttarfélaga.
Virkur félagsmaður. Með virkum félagsmanni er átt við
félagsmann sem greiðir félagsgjöld til stéttarfélags og nýtur
allra réttinda innan þess, þ.m.t. atkvæðisréttar og kjörgengis.
Fullgildur félagsmaður. Félagsmaður sem nýtur allra
réttinda innan stéttarfélags, þ.m.t. atkvæðisréttar og kjör-
gengis, hvort sem hann greiðir félagsgjöld eða ekki.
Skekkjur. Þegar bomar eru saman töflur um fjölda í
stéttarfélögum samkvæmt vinnumarkaðskönnunum og fjölda
virkra félagsmanna í stéttarfélögum í árslok, sem byggjast á
upplýsingum stéttarfélaganna sjálfra, sést að nokkru munar á
þessum tveimur heimildum. Munurinn liggur m.a. annars í því
að í mörgum tilvikum halda launþegar að þeir séu í stéttarfélagi
vegna þess að þeir greiða til þess án þess þó að viðkomandi
stéttarfélag hafi veitt þeim formlega inngöngu. I öðrum til vikum
er eftirlaunafólk taldið til virkra félagsmanna í árslok. Munurinn
á þessum tveimur heimildum er þó ekki mikill nema hvað
varðar aðild að Iðnemasambandi Islands. Sú skýring getur
verið á því að skólanemar og iðnnemar sem jafnframt eiga
aðild að iðnsveinafélagi séu taldir félagsmenn sambandsins.
Leiðréttingar. Villur við röðun stéttarfélaga í heildar-
samtök í vinnumarkaðskönnunum 1993-1997 hafa verið
leiðréttar. Þessar leiðréttingar varða aðallega BHM, BSRB
og ASI. Þá hafa verið leiðréttar rangar töflur fyrir árið 1997
sem birtust í síðustu skýrslu. Loks hefur verið greint á milli
þeirra sem vita ekki hvort þeir séu í stéttarfélagi og þeirra sem
telja sig vera 1 stéttarfélagi en vita ekki hvað félagið heitir.
Síðari hópurinn er nú talinn til þeirra sem tilheyra stéttar-
félögum. Við það hækka tölur um stéttarfélagsþátttöku frá
því sem áður varið talið.
Vogir. í vinnumarkaðskönnunum er aðeins spurt um
stéttarfélög í nóvember ár hvert. Til að fá áætlaðar árstölur
þarf því að vega sérstaklega þegar greint er eftir stéttarfélögum.
Vogir eru fundnar með eftirfarandi hlutfalli:
Labour unions are associations of employees operating
in accordance with the Labour Union and Industrial Disputes
Act and registered with the State Conciliation and Mediation
Service.
Labour union membership at the end of the year 1991-
1998. In connection with its reports on the labour market,
Statistics Iceland has collected reports on the number of
labour unions as of December 31 each year, by sex and type
of membership. Labour organisations and individual non-
affiliated unions are asked to supply information. If written,
itemized information is not obtained, membership figures
are estimated in consultation with representatives of the
association or union in question.
Active member. An active member is a person who pays
union dues and enjoys full rights within the union, including
the right to vote and stand for office.
Full member. A member of a union who enjoys full rights
within it, including the right to vote and stand for office,
whether or not he pays union dues.
Errors. A comparison of the tables for union membership
according to the labour force survey and the active
membership at the end of the year based on figures from the
unions themselves reveals some difference between these
two sources. One reason for this difference is that in many
cases employees are under the impression that they belong to
a union since they pay dues to it, although they have not been
formally admitted. In other cases, pensioners are counted
among active members at the end of the year. The difference
between the sources is not substantial, however, apart from
figures for membership of the Apprentices’ Union of Iceland.
The reason may be that vocational students and student
apprentices who belong to the Apprentices’ Union are also
counted as members of the Federation.
Corrections. Mistakes relating to the allocation of unions
to federations in the surveys 1993-1997 have been corrected
in this report. These corrections mainly affect the Icelandic
Federation of Labour, the Federation of State and Municipal
Employees and the Alliance of Graduate Civil Servants.
Erroneous figures for 1997 published in the last report have
also been corrected. Finally, from now on there will be a
distinction between those who do not know whether or not
they are members of a union and those who believe they are
trade union members, but don’t know which one. The last
group belongs to trade unions, increasing the trade union
density from previously published figures.
Weightings. The labour force survey only asks respondents
about union membership in November of each year. A
special weighting needs to be applied to produce annual
estimates when figures are broken down by unions. The
