46 ÍSLENZKAR LANDBÚNAÐARRANNSÓKNIR
during the period of complete confinement
indoors.
The main results are summarized in the
following paragraphs:
1) On the average the total work time was
distributed as follows: Milking 63,9%,
feeding of hay and silage 16,7 %, cleaning
9,6% and miscellaneous tasks 9,8%.
2) The following mean values were obtained
from work studies on milking:
Milking techniques

The following regression equation shows
the relationship between parameters of
milking performance measured as minu-
tes per litre (y) and minutes per cow and
day (x)
y = — 0.03 + O.lOx
This equation may be applied when de-
ciding on the most suitable system in re-
lation to milking performance.
3) Labour requirements for hay-feeding
were found to vary considerably depen-
ding on facilities and whether the hay
was loose or baled. This ranged from
4—25 minutes per 100 kg of hey fed.
Feeding of baled hay took on the ave-
rage 6.8 min. per 100 kg, feeding loose
hay under good conditions took about
6—10 min. per 100 kg but more than
20 min. per 100 kg under bad condi-
tions. The relationship between total
labour requirements (y, min. per 100 kg
hay) and distance of transport (x, metres)
was found to be
y = 6.11 + 0.40x.
4) Silage feeding required on average about
4.5 min. per 100 kg when feeding from
tower silos but feeding from bunker silos
took about 3-2 minutes per 100 kg. Mec-
hanized cutting of silage in bunkers re-
duced the labour requirements to about
2.3 min. per 100 kg.
5) Feeding of concentrates in the milking
parlour was almost fully automatic,
therefore taking negligible time. Ratio-

ning concentrates in the feeding passage,
normally with wheelbarrows, took 2—
6% of the total time spent on the cattle
tending. In many cases this time was
found to be about 1 min. per 10 kg of
concentrates.
6) It took on the average 2.5 min. to feed
a young calf (milkfeeding). Time spent
on the feeding of barren stock varied
according to conditions. This ranged from
2—3 min per beast per day under bad
conditions to about 1 min. per beast per
day under good conditions.
7) In cowsheds with concrete dunging
passages, cleaning took about 1.2 min.
per cow per day when the dung was
shovelled from the passage, but about
0.6 min. per cow per day when the
dung was pushed through holes in the
floor of the passage. Cleaning of slatted
dunging passages took on average about
0.5 min. per cow per day.
