AM 238 fol. X:
As evident from the above, AM 238 fol. X presents a fairly literal
translation of the vita by John the Deacon without additional material
from the life by Paul the Deacon. The text in AM 238 fol. X most prob-
ably represents a translation related to or derived from the Gregorius
saga translation in NRA fragm. 71, which also presents a close
rendering ofjohn’s vita (cf. Foote [1962], p. 23). The translation prob-
ably began at I, i, 1; the beginning of the text in the fragment must
have been contained in the last 22-23 lines of fol. 2va and thus could
not have included the prologue of the vita.
There are very few verbal agreements between AM 238 fol. X and
Stockholm Perg. fol. 2, and they would seem to be coincidental rather
than suggest a relationship between the two texts. The faet that
Stockholm Perg. fol. no. 2 includes an opening chapter about Greg-
ory’s sisters drawn from the vita by John (III, vi, 38) and the faet that in
