Hvalsåwherehe died. Margrétjonsdottir (d. 1883) was Glsli’swife. She
was daughter of Jon Hjålmarsson (1776-1812), who was a farmer in
Skålholtsvik.7 The Jon Gislason mentioned in the manuscript was Gisli
and Margrét’s son. I have not been able to identify the hånd of 714, but
it seems reasonable to assume with Pili Eggert Olason that 714 was
written late in the eighteenth century.8 The manuscript once belonged
to iustitiarius T6n Pétursson and came to Landsbokasafn after his death
in 1896.9
The GS text in 714 is found in part 15, »af Herodes Ascalonita«, (fols.
88v-94r) covering chapters XXX-XXXII of GS (pp. 806-883 in the edi-
tion) and in a section of part 17, »af Pilato - og 2 Brief har med«, (fols.
96r-104v) covering chapters XXXIII, XXXV-XXXIX of GS (pp. 886-
9020, 93"-10118 in the edition).10 The diagram below illustrates the
length of the individual manuscripts and the sections they cover in re-
lation to 714:11

Most of the GS text in 714, i.e., 90r8-94r22; 96r2-104vl9, can be
compared with 226 and 41. The first part of this section of GS is based
7 If the initials mentioned above are read as »H Th S«, they could stand for Hjålmar
horsteinsson (Thorsteinsson) (1742-1819), who was J6n Hjålmarsson’s father. Hjålm-
ar was a priest in Trollatunga and was, according to Jon Gudnason, »gåfumafiur og vel

urufræSi og lækningar; kennimafiur go6ur, skrifari, målari og békbindari.« Hjålmar’s
hånd is found in JS 161-2 fol. but differs considerably from that of 714.
