Skulle man foreslå et sted på det europæiske fastland, der kan have
været arnested for Mariadyrkelsen, drages ens tanker uvilkårligt mod
Cluny, der var Europas åndelige midtpunkt i tusindårene og i begyndel-
sen af 1100-tallet med nær forbindelse til Rom. Flere af abbederne i
Cluny holdt legendegenren i hævd, Odo (d. 942), Odilo (d. 1048), Hugo
(d. 1109), nær ven med ærkebisp Anselm af Canterbury, som også gjor-
de sig gældende i Mariadyrkelsens blomstringstid, og Petrus Venerabi-
lis (d. 1156). Venskabet mellem abbed Hugo og ærkebisp Anselm er
blevet vel dokumenteret af Southern. I Ms (s. 1753) siges det rent ud, at
de to var hiartaligir cvmpanar sin a midil.
Det tredje synspunkt, jeg ville anlægge på B-samlingen, gælder sam-
lingens omfang. Det er kendt fra adskillige samlinger, at de er sammen-
vokset af forskellige mindre samlinger (kendt er SG1 og SG2, som jeg
har foreslået udvidet til SG3, jfr. Widding 1967 s. 153). Der kan ræson-
neres om B-samlingens oprindelige længde på forskellig vis. Det er
f.eks. rimeligt at sige, at da TS nr. 17, Saturday, har nr. 46, ville det
være naturligt at lade den være slutstenen på værket, så meget mere
som den følgende legende, Constantine and the Lamp of Balsam, gen-
tager temaet i nr. 19. Dette nummer havde vid udbredelse, og da legen-
den har relation til liturgien, er teksten optaget hos Durandus i hans Ra-
tionale (d’Avino 1859), og den fandt desuden optagelse i historiske
skrifter (Historia de profectione Danorum in Hierosolymam k. 26 (Gertz
1922 s. 490f.), jfr. D i Ms s. 1033 og i samme håndskrift under omtalen
af lørdagsmessen s. 1075).
Et andet ræsonnement kan gennemføres på basis af syntaktisk-stilis-
tiske iagttagelser. Det er så omfattende, at det her kun kommer til an-
tydninger. Det gælder 1. nogle tidskonjunktioner, en (eller ok) er eller
sem .. (pa), og 2. udeladt subjektpronomen i underordnede sætninger
(Lund 1862 s. 242-244 § 88), der samordnet i et skema kan bruges til at
stil- og tidspræge teksterne (som skitseret af mig 1975 s. 56-59). En
sådan undersøgelse har overbevist mig om, at hverken nr. 47 Constan-
tine and the Lamp of Balsam, der giver en anden baggrund for daglige
Mariatider end nr. 19 (Gripkey 1952 nr. I, 3), eller numrene 48 Det tyr-
kiske hoved besejret, 49 Heremannus contractus, 50 Lilje i mund eller
51 Romaldus passer særlig godt ind i samlingen.
Der er en lille tilføjelse, som kan have stor teksthistorisk betydning.
Der er det specielle ved nr. 43 Mary Image Insulted, at samme legende
findes i L (Ms s. 599-601) og i S (Ms s. 255-256). Disse to er samme
