samme specielt regulerede rækkefølge af legenderne som D og E2, som
Unger har anvendt i sin udgave.
Man må herefter regne med tre stadier i legendesamlingernes histo-
rie. Det første trin er repræsenteret af de lokale samlinger, der er knyttet
til bestemte byer, Mariekirker eller klostre. Det er karakteristisk for
dem, at det oftest er korte historier, der i reglen opgiver navne på de
agerende personer og navne på de steder, hvor begivenhederne udspil-
ledes. I de korte historier er underet eller miraklet sat i fokus. Som ek-
sempel på legender på dette stade kan man nævne legender i samlingen
foretaget af Hugo Farsitus (Ms s. 654-681 = PL 179 sp. 1777-1800) og
de spredte legender fra Roc-Amadour, et stednavn, der straks ved over-
førelsen til norrønt sprog fik formen Rothomador.
Det må ikke misforstås derhen, at alle gamle fortællinger om Jomfru
Maries underværker var korte og koncentrerede om et mirakel. Der
fandtes lange mirakelhistorier, der snart var forfattede af kirkefædrene,
snart var gamle fabulerende æventyr, der ved små indgreb lod sig om-
danne til Marialegender. Den mest typiske er vel den legende, der her
går under navnet Chaste Empress, kejserinden, der efter mandens lange
krigstogt af den forsmåede bejler blev beskyldt for utroskab mod gema-
len. Der findes nogle eksempler på denne type af legender i håndskrif-
terne L og S. I E1 står der i begyndelsen fem-seks sådanne historier:

III Johannes Damascenus Ms s. 438-444, der afslutter med en lov-
prisning af Gud Herren og hans moder

VI Hertil må regnes fredsslutningen mellem herskeren over det span-
ske kongerige Aragonien og hertugen af St. Gilles i Sydfrankrig
Ms s. 466-468, hvor et Mariabillede spiller en afgørende rolle (Ma-
riabillede som fredsstifter)
E1 går herefter over til at give levnedstegninger af personer, der er kendt
for deres hyldning af BMV. Anselm af Canterbury, Hugo af Cluny,
Bernhard af Clairvaux og flere.
Det andet stadium omfatter de sammenstykkede legendesamlinger.
