A very similar list is found in CTV Vl.xxxiv. 231A, 38-231B, 4:
Multa sunt per quæ tolluntur peccata venialia ... ut omnia sacramenta
Ecclesiæ,... aqua benedicta ... et episcopalis benedictio, et alia sacramental-
ia,... oratio Dominicalis, eleemosyna, jejunium, et hujusmodi.
But the Icelandic text ends with a list of signs of humility which is more
elaborate than Hugh Ripelin’s text. The list in Spec. Pen. is entirely in
Latin, and has evidently been taken over directly from some Latin
source. Compare Spec. Pen. 366-369:
et per signa humilit<ati>s et devocionis. que sunt manuum eleuacio. capitis
inclinacio pectoris tunsio. corporis incurvacio. genvum flexio. lac(er)torum
proieccio. ventris conglu<tin)acio.
and C7Y Vl.xxxiv. 231A, 46-231B, 2:
Tertio est exercitium humilitatis ex parte nostra, sicut est tunsio pectoris in
confessione venialium.
The Icelandic author adds a scriptural echo which is not paralleled in
C7Y at Spec. Pen. 369-370: ‘vnde conglutinatus est venter noster’,
from Psalm 43:25 in the Gallican Psalter: conglutinatus est in terra
venter noster.
At Spec. Pen. 371 the author returns to the subject of caritas and
notes the claim of ritningin (a term which, like scriptura, could be ap-
plied to any written authority and which here, at any rate, evidently
does not refer to Holy Scripture) that mortal sin takes away charity and
that no man may be helped unless he recover charity before he dies.
These remarks find no close parallel in C7Y, apart from a very general
observation that mortal sin removes charity (C7Y Vl.xxxiii. 230A, 7-8:
cum enim peccatum mortale tollat charitatem). The author continues
with a discussion of the three things necessary for a work to be accept-
able to God and helpful for the soul {Spec. Pen. 374-393). This passage
is paralleled in Hugh Ripelin’s text, although in this case the Latin re-
quires some rearrangement to accord with the Icelandic. Compare Spec.
Pen. 374-376:
