Ad hoc quod aliquod opus sit meritorium, tria requiruntur. Primo, quod ip-
sum opus fiat in charitate, ... secundo, quod fiat ex charitate, ... tertio, quod
idem opus sit referibile ad bonum.
However the next sentence in the Icelandic text is drawn from a later
chapter in CTV, book five. Compare Spec. Pen. 376-381:

and CTVV.xv. 164B, 15-18:
... nullius hominis opus placet Deo, nisi placeat ipse prius. Unde prius re-
spexit Deus ad Abel, quam ad munera ejus, ut dicitur. Genes, iv, 4.
[cf. Gn 4:4-5: et respexit Dominus ad Abel et ad munera eius; ad Cain vero et
ad munera illius non respexit]
The Icelandic author then repeats the first of these three conditions
(Spec. Pen. 381-382: ‘Nu er pessi fyrsta grein at madrinn sialfur se in
caritate’), and reinforces this remark with a quotation from I lo 4:16
(Spec. Pen. 382-383: ‘vnde deus caritas est et qui manet in caritate in
d[eo manet]’). This scriptural passage is not cited at this point in C7Y,
although it might be noted that the same verse is quoted in another dis-
cussion of charity at C7VV.xxv. 174A, 2-3. The Icelandic author’s next
observation, that a work void of charity is like a dead coal void of heat,
is drawn from CTV V.xiii, which provides a parallel for the rest of his
discussion of the three requisite characteristics of good works. Com-
pare Spec. Pen. 383-389:
