året. Med mindre A.M. ved auktionen har været repræsenteret af en an-
den, må den have fundet sted inden den 29. maj dette år, for den dag af-
sejlede A.M. til Island for at iværksætte sin indsamling af materiale til
jordebogsprojektet.
Etatsråd Jens Rosenkrantz til Qvitzowsholm38 var en af datidens store
bogsamlere;39 en gennemgang af auktionskatalogerne over hans trykte
bøger viser, at hans bibliotek har rummet over 15.000 bind. Da adskilli-
ge bind var samlingsbind, der indeholdt flere værker, har samlingen
snarere været på ca. 20.000 værker. Hans bibliotek var dog i den lærde
verden særlig kendt for sine mange værdifulde håndskrifter om Nor-
dens kultur og historie.
Etatsråd Jens Rosenkrantz havde fået sin uddannelse på Sorø Akade-
mi, hvor faderen var forstander. Han fik høje embeder, var landsdom-
mer på Fyn, blev i 1692 kammerråd og året efter etatsråd. Han havde
arvet sin faders og farfaders store litterære og historiske interesser og
omtales som en lærd og belæst mand. Sit store bibliotek stillede han
generøst til rådighed for andre lærde.
Af sin samtid blev han betragtet som den store mæcen. Torfæus skri-
ver fra Stangeland den 2. november 1693 til A.M., at han nu har to års
gage til gode, og den 17. november samme år skriver han: “Par sem
echi verdur greitt um mitt gage, schyllde eche estatzraad Rosenkrantz
kunna at hialpa mer Jjar i, ef eg schrifa honum til? hann er Mæcenas,
och goed forhaabning um hann”.40
Da biblioteket af trykte bøger efter Rosenkrantz’ død kom under
hammeren, var det det største, der hidtil var blevet bortsolgt i hovedsta-
den.
Straks efter Rosenkrantz’ død gjorde A.M. sig bekymringer om, hvad
der skulle blive af dennes håndskriftsamling. Den 27. april 1695 skriver
han til Torfæus fra Leipzig: “Hvad verdur nu af ollum J)eim MStum, er
