Art in Copenhagen
HAPPENINGS IN THE DANISH CAPITAL
There’s more to Copenhagen than the touristy sites of Nyhavn,
Tivoli, the royal family and Strøget, Europe’s longest shopping
street. Copenhagen also has a thriving cultural scene that
includes more than the free state of Christiania.
Art aficionados visiting Copenhagen this year should check out
Pablo Picasso, an exhibit showing the central aspects of
Picasso’s stylistic development at ARKEN Museum of Modern
Kunst, just 20 kilometres from downtown Copenhagen
(www.arken.dk). Running from 31 January through 13 June,
the exhibition contains 90 rarely exhibited works from Gernard
Ruiz-Picasso’s (the artist’s grandchild) exceptional private col-
lection, which span the whole of Picasso’s career.
Over at the Louisiana Museum, Kingdoms of the Sun, a collec-
tion comprising mainly pre-Columbian ceramics from North,
South and Central America, can be seen through 15 February.
This Indian art and craftsmanship comes from before the peri-
od of European colonization that began around 1500. There will
also be objects from Africa, New Guinea and European antiq-
uity.
