Atlantica - 01.05.2007, Side 9
Dear Passenger, We frequent flyers often forget how much fun it is to fly. For us, it seems like a non-event, something we must do, just a simple part of our work and less something we enjoy. But I was recently reminded of what a privilege it is to take part in the excitement and anticipation of people traveling to distant and foreign places. One of our customers told us a story of his flight to London this Easter holiday. He was traveling with his fam- ily, including his six-year-old daughter. The approach to Heathrow was uneventful until just before landing, when suddenly the engines roared and the aircraft climbed. (Air Traffic Control had asked the pilots to do a so-called ‘go-around’ because another aircraft had not cleared the runway). For most passengers this is a very uncomfortable moment and for a few seconds the tension ran high throughout the cabin. Just at that nervous moment the six-year- old girl looked at her father and asked, “Did we fly to the wrong country?” This delightful and innocent view of the world reflected in her question is a reminder of the wonders of flying. Every year, new generations experience the adventure of being whisked into the air by a plane for the first time, only to then find themselves in a new country a few hours later. The question, “How do the pilots really know where each country is?!” is a totally relevant question to them, as is the notion that if pilots do not find the right country on the first try that they simply fly to the next airport and try again! This year Icelandair celebrates its 70th anniversary. In Iceland, in 1937, our founding year, no six-year-old girl would have dreamed of ever leaving the country by plane to see another country. It simply was not done. Now, most six-year-old Icelanders have traveled with their families for vacations abroad. We at Icelandair are proud of our tradition and of the role we have played in our country’s history. Through its ever-increasing service over the last seven decades, Icelandair has changed the way this island nation sees the world, and the way the world sees Iceland. This summer Icelandair offers direct flights to 25 destinations in Europe and North America. Through the frequency of flights, we offer the world to Icelanders and Iceland to the world. I wish you a great flight and hope you land in the right country! Jón Karl Ólafsson CEO, Icelandair Head Office, Advertising: Heimur Ltd.
