ICELAND REVIEW 71Visit www.stg.is for further information STG - ÍSVÉLAR Total Solutions from Sea to Plate This spring, STG-Ísvélar President Snæbjorn Tr. Gudnason received a call from a friend in need: he was throwing a compa- ny party that large quantities of warm drinks threatened to ruin. Why was Gudnason the only man to call? Because STG is the only company in Iceland with its own ice-generating system on wheels, a roving testament to the cutting-edge technology that STG offers. In less than an hour, Gudnason’s demonstration trail- er produced a ton of high-density ice for his friend. The party guests are not STG’s only satisfied customers. “We try to visit our customers as much as possible,” Gudnason explains. Built in 1999, the MULTI-ICE demonstration trailer has travelled 65,000 kilometres. “You never get the same effect than if you are there, showing the system, and meeting with customers on their location,” he continues. “What you see is what you get.” Today, STG’s MULTI-ICE System with Natural White* Mineral Control is the only chilling system on the market to com- bine the technology of simultaneous production of thick and thin Ice-Gel with Natural White* Mineral Control. Their new design in MULTI-ICE storage tanks, ranging from 1.5-ten tonnes, allows for over 24 hours of storage in thick Ice-Gel. The first MULTI-ICE System with Natural White* will be installed aboard one of Iceland’s largest fresh fish trawlers this year. In May 2001, Faroe Islands’ fish trawler Roc Amadour was outfitted with STG´s second-largest 330 MULTI-ICE System. The results were outstanding. The chilling time for their first catch using STG´s system was reduced from 20 hours to one. The catch reached a temperature of 0°C in 50-60 minutes – a process that would have taken 15-24 hours using conventional ice. “You are saving manpower. You are exceeding the time that you can store the fish. You’re storing it at a lower temperature,” Gudnason explains. “And you’re getting better quality, better prices, and doubling or tripling the sea days of the ship.” This winning formula led one STG MULTI-ICE customer to calculate a payback time of less than one hundred days for their system. STG strives to supply its customers with a total solution and professional consulting, provided by Icelandic fishing captains with decades of experience. STG’s team also designs and manu- factures washing systems for tubs, boxes and barrels, STAVA fishgrading systems, hydraulic piping, and maintenance and refrigeration service. “In today’s market,” Gudnason reflects, “companies are allowed to catch less and less. They are focusing on getting as much value for the catch as possible.” The MULTI-ICE System with Natural White* Mineral Control is a timely answer to these needs. “This is the system that is allowing them to do it,” adds Gudnason. “And that is why we present the ‘From Sea to Plate: Total Solution’ strategy that ensures first stage quality through the whole process.” The chilling time for their first catch using STG´s system was reduced from 20 hours to one. The catch reached a temperature of 0°C in 50-60 minutes – a process that would have taken 15-24 hours using conventional ice. 61 IR302 - Iceland Businesbs-rm 2.9.2002 13:43 Page 71
