Summary The paper begins with a discussion about the interrelationship of the three main elements in the reading process: author, text, and reader. The first relationship discussed is that between the author and his text, speci- fically how the author uses the text to influence his readers. Secondly, the relationship of the reader to the text — how the reader approaches the text, by entering into the reading process — is taken up. Textbooks in rhetoric from the first centuries of our era show us how students were trained to involve their audiences in a reading process. These textbooks are of great importance for the modem reader in approaching ancient texts. In the second part of the paper there is a proposal for a three-step method for reading texts, based upon the discussion in the first part of the paper: (1) First the text is studied in its literary context; (2) then the text is studied in its historical and social context; (3) and finally an attempt is made to discover the "universals" in the text which form the basis for entering into the reading process. In the third part, the role of the reader in modem society is discussed, especially within the church and the university; and the necessity for everyone to become a critical reader is stressed. 70
