Young Reader’s Corner — 4 brand new feature
In thc new year, Lögberg-
Heimskringla will begin a new regular
feature underthe heading, Young Read-
er’s Corner. It is another attempt to ap-
pcal to rcaders of all ages. We recognize
that if we are to survive in the years to
come, we have to increase the size of our
readership, and appeal to younger read-
ers as well. In this area, as in others, our
present subscribers have helped. Some
have chosen to give ayear’s subscription
to Lögberg-Heimskringla to Icelandic
friends and relatives, and others have
supported us by making our existence
known.
The YoungRcaders CorncrwiU be an
additional feature, that our readcrs can
look forward to each week. We already
have quite a lot of material prepared for
this column. Frank Sigurdson, of Winni-
peg, a retired principal, has prcpared a
23 chapter series, titled, Whcrc arc thc
Icclandcrs, on the Icclandic experience
in North Amcrica. Each chapter has its
own subheadingsuch as: Whylcavc Icc-
land ,Thc Icclandcrs scarch for thc best
placc to scttlc; Somc Icclandcrs choose
Canada; Ncw Iccland—Thc choicc is
madc, Winnipcgat last, and so on. Each
chapter, orepisode, isquite
short, and Mr. Sigurdson
has also suggested how our
readership can be actively
involved by, for example,
sending a postcard or a
letter to Lögberg-Heim-
skringla indicating where
their Icelandic ancestors
settled in America and
where they live now, or
what they perceive as good
ways of preserving the Ice-
landic heritage.

experience, which is not at all well repre-
sented in their school textbooks.
In studying for my Mastcr of Arts
Dcgrcc, which I completcd in 1971, I
spccializcd in Canadian studics. Onc of
thc papcrs I wrotc was a fairly dctailcd
story about thc dcvelopment ofan Icc-
landicpresence in America. I used forty-
two diffcrcnt rcsource materials in thc
course of my research on the topic. At
the timc whcn I rcccived my Master’s
Degrec, I had been appointed to the
position of principal in the
Winnipeg School Division.
This mcant thatany further
work rclated to Canadian
history had to be set aside.
I had a reason to visit the
Lögberg-Heimskringla of-
fice in July. Knowing that I
had been in education,
Hulda Karcn Daníelsdóttir
began telling me about a
need for the paper to attract
more young rcaders. I told
her about the paper that I
had writtcn about thc Icc-
landers. Thc result is that
my stoiy will be printed in
scrial form in a special scc-
tion to bc callcd Young
Reader’s Corner. The cpi-
sodcs, which arc to appcar
wcckly in the Lögberg-
Hcimskringla, will be cdited to makc

them more intcresting to young people.
After featuring Frank Sigurdson’s 23
episodes, thc Young Rcadcr’s Corner
will continue to be thc place whcre arti-
cles by and for young rcaders will ap-
