8 MYOCARDIAL FUNCTION IN A POPULATION SAMPLE OF MIDDLE-AGED MEN WITH ANGINA PECTORIS AND NORMAL OR STENOSED CORONARY ARTFRIES M. Haqman, J. Wikstrand, I. Wallentin, D. Schlossman, K. Selin, B. Wennerblom and L. Wilhelmsen Section of Preventive Cardiology, Med.Clin. I, Dep. of Clin. Physiology and Dep. of Radiology, Sahlgren's Hospital Göteborg, Sweden In the Primary Preventive Trial in Göteborg the prevalence of angina pectoris was established in 8 age-cohorts of middle- aged men. At follow-up an extensive investigation of the myo- cardial function in cases with angina pectoris was performed among men born in 1924-25. Twentyfive out of 4o attended invasive as well as non-invasive investigation. Coronary angiography revealed that 15 cases out of 25 had normal vessels (NV) and that lo cases had significantly stenosed vessels (SV). The frequency of hypertension was about 3o% in both groups. Resting ECG showed pathological findings according to the Minnesota Code in 4o% in the NV group and in 3o% in the SV group. Report on dyspnoea was given in 73% in the NV group and in 4o% in the SV group., Echocardiography, phonocardiography and measurements of systolic and diastolic time intervals disclosed convincing pathological findings to about the same degree in groups with normal and stenosed vessels. The results indicate that in angina pectoris signs of myocardial dysfunction will be found both in cases with and without coronary artery stenosis. It is also obvious that cases with "non-arteriosclerotic angina" (Syndrome X according to Kubler et al) is not too uncommon in the population.
