The Coocoo's Nest
Nestled in a refurbished fishing hut in
the newly-flourishing area of Grandi, The
Coocoo’s Nest is a cosy and airy cafe, offer-
ing California-casual brunch, lunch, and din-
ner, with an Italian twist. With large windows
and light wood throughout, this is perfect for
a lazy Saturday get-together or an afternoon
‘aperitivo’ after work. If you are in that part of
town, head over for a warm-up.
Grandagarður 23
Stofan
Voted the best place to read a book in the
Grapevine Best of Reykjavík awards (2012,
2013 and 2015), this old-timey coffee house
is something straight out of a Carl Larsson
painting. A perfect place to spend the day
sitting on their antique furniture and sip-
ping delicious drinks, both alcoholic and
otherwise.

Places We Like
Although some claim service at Ban Thai can
be lacking at times, most have no complaints
about the food (indeed, we dubbed it Reyk-
javík’s “best Thai restaurant” in our annual
BEST OF issue last year). One of the few Thai
restaurants in Iceland, Ban Thai gives the
diner a unique experience in both atmosphere
and cuisine.

Apótek Restaurant
This restaurant is cosy and stylish with
friendly staff and a South American-infused
menu. The name joyfully refers to the fact that
the building used to house a pharmacy in
days past, and the cocktail menu reflects this,
split up into painkillers, stimulants, tranquilliz-
ers and placebos.

Fish Company
The Fish Company (Fiskifélagið) is acclaimed
as one of Reykjavík’s best ‘fancy’ restaurants.
Located in a charmingly dark space under-
ground at Vesturgata 2a, this bustling, cave-
like locale provides fine sanctuary from the
cold winds outside in the winter, and respite
from the powerful sunshine of summer.

Dill
Pioneering New Nordic Kitchen-style cuisine
in Iceland, Dill Restaurant very quickly
became a Reykjavík favourite, which it con-
tinues to be in its new location. Exclusively
using fresh and classic Nordic ingredients,
Dill offers a unique dining experience.

Loft Hostel
With a brilliant location right in the centre of
the action, the views from the upstairs bar
and rooftop patio at the Loft Hostel can't
be more entertaining. In addition to clean,
comfortable rooms for all types of travellers,
this new hostel is quickly becoming a hotspot
for live music and comfortable accommoda-
tion alike.

8 Kaldi Bar
A small, stylish drinking hole popular with
the after-work business crowd, this is a
great place to feel a little classier and drink
with dignity. The beer selection is top-notch,
and the handcrafted interior tips the scales
of upscale rustic charm. You can be certain
that conversation will rule, not loud music.
Laugavegur 20b
9Kaffitár
Kaffitár on Bankastræti is a comfortable little
café with a great selection of coffee, tea and
baked goods on offer. Since Kaffitár is also a
big-name Icelandic roasterie, the caffeinated
beverages on the menu are quality. A classic
spot for caffeine and laptop addicts and
freelancers, but get there early because it fills
up fast and early!
