Report on Sea Ice off the Icelandic Coasts, Oct. 1962 - Sept. 1963
Scattered drift ice invaded Icelandic waters
off the northwestern promontories in January
and February and for most of the period the
ice margin or big fields of drift ice were un-
usually close to the NW-ern coasts. The ice did
not impede sailing round Cape Horn but caused
some inconveniences to fishing boats. However,
the winter was generally mild and favourable
in Iceland, but the summer was cool and really
unfavourable towards the end. Below are given
the monthly normals (1931—1960) and the means
1962/63 for Cape Horn and Stykkishólmur the
latter being the classic climatological station of
Iceland.

boundary frotn Cape Straumnes about 80 miles
with nearest approach of 50 miles towards the
end of the month.

to 6900/2300 to 6830/2400 to 6816/2500 to 6812
/2530 to 6816/2600 to 6830/2640 to 6822/2800
to 6818/2900 to 6800/3000 to 6758/3130 to 6730/
3300. A number of icebergs near the Green-
land coasts and a single one at 6730/2612.
9/io Slush boundary from 7105/1910 to 6920
/2030 to 6730/2640 to 6700/2700'to 6725/2730
to 6722/2905 to 6745/2915 to 6745/3045 to
6717/3045 to 6555/3350 to 6608/3500. Pack
boundary about 40 miles inland of slush limit.
Brash and block in interim. Fast ice average 12
miles wide. Icebergs were observed at 6512/
2950, 6515/3315 and 6512/3415.

to 6730/3000 to 6750/2730. Limit of brash and
3200 to 6726/2500 to 6638/2630 to 6625/2600

3120, 6705/2700 and 6800/2450.
NOVEMBER 1962
The average distance from. Cape Straumnes
was 65 miles with nearest approach of 40 miles
at the end of month.
10/ii Brash boundary running from 6853/
1905 to 6745/2425 to 6710/2540 to 6730/2800
to 6710/2800 to 6630/3015 to 6640/3100 to
6650/3125 to 6658/3330. Brash and block boun-
dary average 18 miles from pack boundary.
Several icebergs near the Greenland coast and
a single one at 6648/2930.
14/n Pack boundary from 7000/1850 to 6915
/1845 to 6845/1945 to 6742/2520 to 6730/2540
to 6720/2730 to 6735/3000 to 6720/3050 to 6530
/3645. Slush extends 18 miles seawards.
21 /n Pack ice boundary from 7040/1900 to
