Heimili og vinnumarkaður 183 8. Heimili og vinnumarkaður 8. Households and the labour market Yfirlit Frá árinu 1993 hefur Hagstofan i vinnumarkaðskönnunum lagt fyrir spumingar um aðra heimilismenn, tengsl við svaranda, aldur og kyn auk nokkurra spuminga um atvinnu- þátttöku. Með hjálp þessara spuminga er hægt að fá vitneskju sem ekki hefur áður legið fyrir um samsetningu heimila, atvinnuþátttöku og atvinnuleysi eftirheimilisgerð. Samkvæmt þessum gögnum var fjöldi heimila 89.900 árið 1997 og hafði fj ölgað um rúmlega 3.000 frá 1993. Þegar athuguð er atvinnu- þátttaka og atvinnuleysi eftir samsetningu heimila kemur í ljós að árið 1997 var atvinnuþátttakan minnst á eins manns heimilum en mest á heimilum einstæðra foreldra. Ekki var marktækur munur á atvinnuleysi eftir heimilisgerð það ár. Synopsis Since 1993, Statistics Iceland has included questions in its labour market survey about other members of the household, their relationship with the respondent, age and sex, along with several questions about activity rate. With the help of these questions it is possible to obtain information which has not been previously available about the composition of households, labour market participation and unemployment by type of household. These data reveal that the number of households in 1997 was 89,900, an increase of more than 3,000 households since 1993. An examination of activity rate and unemployment by household composition reveals that in 1997 participation was lowest in one-person households and greatest at the households of singleparents. There was no significant difference in unemployment according to type of household that year. Concepts and methodology A houschold is the place where the respondent in a labour market survey is permanently resident or based and generally spends his or her free time, keeps his or her household effects and sleeps when not temporarily absent on account of vacation, travel in connection with work, illness or other comparable events. Private households are all households other than those at institutions, such as dormitories at fish processing plants or other work camps, guesthouses, boarding schools, prisons, closed places of work, hospitals, communes or religious communities. An adult member of a household is any person aged 16 or above. Couples who live with children aged 16 or above at
