1525. The 1318 charter lists 57 books (DI 2, pp. 455-56); the 1394
charter 68 books (DI 3, pp. 512-13); the 1429 charter one book (DI 4,
pp. 372-73); the 1431 charter is simply an appendix to the one written
in 1429 (DI 4, p. 465); the 1461 charter specifies only 21 books of the
library (DI 5, pp. 260-62); that of 1525 c. 30 books (DI 9, pp. 333-
34).
The Icelandic church charters usually begin by defining the church
property. Next follows an inventory of the altar apparel and the
vestments; exceptionally, books may be mentioned in this section
(because their place was at the altar). The specified book-lists usually
come after this entry, or towards the end of the charter.
All the charters (except that of 1431) mention, in the paragraph
relating to vestments and altar apparel, ‘texti buinn’, ‘texti med kodda’,
or ‘texti’ alone, that is, the Gospels. Thus, on account of its position in
the charter (and in the church), it is the one book named in the 1429
charter, which otherwise omits all mention of books.
F. (1) contains Ioh. 9, 21-10,9; f. (2), Ioh. 12, 22-47. There are no
numeral divisions in the text, nor any marginal concordance numbers.
A collation with I. Wordsworth & H. J. White, Novum Testamen-
tum (Oxford 1889-98), pp. 547 sqq., renders the following variants:
