stus” (Aen. II, 471), and, if so, does that imply that both Tmsl and
Tms2 had access to an otherwise unknown paraphrase of the
Aeneid? A further development of the theme is the equation between
Pyrrhus and the Fenrisúlfr in the Epilogue to Skáldskaparmál in
Snorra Edda (on this Epilogue, see above, p. 6).

C. Additions peculiar to a.
Here it is difficult to draw a line between interpolations proper
and expansions of a more stylistic character. I have, however,
endeavoured to make such a distinction, in such a way that
additions with a narrative content are listed under C, while speech-
es, expanded descriptions etc. are treated in the following chapter.
Cl. a 2,16-21. On Hercules. This passage is taken from Alex-
anders saga, see Finnur Jónsson’s edition, Cph. 1925, p. 13,8-9:
“Hercules enn sterki oc enn viðforle”, and 2,22-25: “at Hercules son
Iovis hafi kreist isvndr orma tva með sinni hende hvarnn. þa er Iuno
stiupmoðir hans hafði til sent at drepa hann. Reivabamn var hann
þa er hann gerði þetta storvirke”43.
On other loans from Alexanders saga in a, see below, pp. xlvii ff.
C2. a 9,4-5. A kind of preface to B6 above.
C3. a 10,25-11,31. On Hercules. p, too, contains a chapter on
Hercules (28,4 ff.) but it differs from the one in a. The chapter in a
has a twofold origin. The description of Hercules, a 10,25-11,7, has
been lifted almost verbatim from the description of Achilles a few
pages further on (a 23,2-8). The account of the labours of Hercules,
on the other hand, is taken from Alexanders saga (cf. Cl):
a 11,9-13
