No counterpart is found in Passionael or any known
Icelandic legend. Dismas and Gesmas are named in
Legenda Aurea’s version of Leg. and it is tempting
to assume that the compiler of D had access to an
adaptation of Legenda Aurea that was more detailed
than Passionael. The possibility must also be taken
into account, however, that Legenda Aurea’s version
may itself have been known in Iceland in the Middle
Ages.
The problem as to the sources of the legends in
667 and Perg. fol. 3 cannot be solved definitely
until editions of these MSS are available and all
German editions of the Passionael have been exam-
ined in detail.
A comparison of D 1-26 with the two medieval
versions of Leg., A and EF, is complicated by the
fact that shortly after the point where the D frag-
ment begins, the A text undergoes revision and
abbreviation. The passage whicli is found in D, A
and EF will be printed here together with the cor-
responding text in L:
