omit a stanza or have a lacuna, and also when the
order of the stanzas differs from that in the main
text. A survey of all stanzas which liave been omitted
or lost in lacunae is given below.
The critical apparatus is arranged in the following
way. The reading in the printed text is given first,
followed by indication as to which groups have this
reading. Then appear the variant or variants which
occur in more than one MS group, with indication
of the relevant groups. If a group or a MS is not
named, this means that the reading in this group
or MS is so isolated or so secondary in appearance
that it has been reckoned to be of no value. By
following this principle it has been possible to present
a critical apparatus that is not overburdened with
variants without significance for textual criticism.
The method employed can be illustrated by an
example from I 51.3. Here it seems certain that the
original reading must have been vid homu þýna,
which only appears in B and F. A has homu þýna.
In the text and critical apparatus, these are the
only three groups named. The others liave the fol-
lowing readings: hom þar inn og C, hiemb hár þín því
D1-2, qvediu min ber D3, hondu ad sinn enn E, homdu
þýn og G, hiendu þýn og H1-2, hiendu þin enn H3,
hieldu þýn og H4, j hláru shine I. None of these
readings, all of which must be considered to be
isolated revisions, are named in the critical apparatus.
