JANUARY
THORRINN
Every winter at the end of January, Icelanders celebrate the old feast
of thorrablót. This is a very lively and joyful festivity with a lot of
singing, dancing and drinking, and, of course, the consumption of tra-
ditional Viking food. This includes smoked lamb, singed sheep heads,
stockfish, rye bread steamed in the hot ground, shark, and rams’ tes-
ticles – all washed down with brennivín (an Icelandic spirit).

With Fluxus the objective part of a work of art became increasingly
less important at the same time as there was increased emphasis on
the concept, the act of creation and the attitude of the artist and the
spectator to what was created. This will be evident in an exhibition of
artists such as Joseph Beuys, Bazon Brock, Charlotte, Moorman, Wolf
Vostell and many others at the National Gallery.

The last day of Yule, celebrated in latter years with bonfires and elven dances. Many of the magical happenings asso-
ciated with New Year's Eve are also supposed to occur on threttándinn.
