SHORT CUTS
A review of the nation´s top stories and recent events.
VITAL SIGNS
Loved and feared, Fjallabaksleid is a stunning and desolate
route running through Iceland's south-central Highlands.
Krista Mahr set out to take the pulse of the infamous road
behind the mountains and the people who brave it. Photos
by Páll Stefánsson.
SQUEEZE BOX
Every three years the Icelandic Accordion Association gathers
all its members together for one massive shindig: the National
Accordion Festival. What the heck is an accordion festival like?
Edward Weinman looked for some answers. Photos by Spessi.
HOME IS WHERE THE ART IS
This year, Scandinavia's most prestigious art awards, the
Carnegie Art Awards, arrive in Reykjavík, and the three
Icelandic nominees will be here to stick up for their smoky bay.
THE PRINCESS AND THE NOMADS
Icelandic horseflesh was not the only thing on display at this
year's National Championships. The presence of Britain's
Princess Anne gave a royal stamp of approval to the proceed-
ings. Kristján B. Jónasson went for the ride.
THE BIG CATCH
Just over 100 years ago, East Greenland got its first taste of
Europe, and vice versa. Today, in towns where Adidas is the
brand of choice and the only kayaker in the harbour is
employed by Air Iceland, everybody's still trying to understand
each other. Krista Mahr visited Iceland's nearest neighbour.

OUT OF THE BLUE

MARS IN MýVATN
If the plans of the Mars Society go as hoped, photographs
from lake Mývatn (northeast Iceland) will soon picture a ten-
metre-tall, tube-shaped spacecraft, researchers wearing silver
spacesuits, and friendly robots creeping around the volcanic
landscape. Andrea Ósk Jónsdóttir reports.
