MTV NOMINATION FOR QUARASHI Quarashi nominated for an MTV Music Video Award The music video to the song ‘Stick ‘Em Up’, by the Icelandic rap band Quarashi, has been nominated for an MTV Music Video Award. The video was nominated in the category for best art direction, along with videos from such giants as Elton John and Coldplay. At the time of writing, the staff of Iceland Review was eagerly await- ing for the awards to be presented at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on 29 August. RISING STAR Ugla Egilsdóttir voted best actress The 16-year-old Icelandic actress, Ugla Egilsdóttir, was voted best actress at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival (Czech Republic) in July for her role as Agga in the film Mávahlátur by Ágúst Gudmundsson. The festival is highly respected in the film industry and is one of the few elite ‘A-group festivals.’ LLAMAS IN THE HIGHLANDS? Outdoorsmen apply for permission to import llamas Three Icelandic outdoorsmen sent the Ministry of Agriculture a request last August for permission to import llamas for use on trips to Iceland’s Highlands. The partnership, which calls itself ‘Íslama’, claims that llamas are better beasts of burden than horses, since they weigh less and have broader cloven hoofs. In addition, they do less damage to the environment, have the capacity to carry heavier loads, and can travel up to 30km every day. ‘Íslama’ asked for permission to import the animals from Canada, where no signs of mad cow disease have been found. They are now waiting for a reply from the Ministry of Agriculture. 05 IR302 - Short Cuts bs km 2.9.2002 13:22 Page 6
