of the early 21st century, but risk it becom- ing just that. In the ‘30s, for instance, skate skin was a fashionable high-end leather. Though beautiful, it was stiff, impractical, and it disappeared. Sjávarledur aims to transcend any temporal status. “Now, we want companies that are not so marginal to use it,” says Sigrún. “We want the world to acknowledge this as just another high- class leather.” And once they succeed, they face the challenge of maintaining control over a successful product.
