His maternal grandmother, the late
Mrs. A. Stanley Jackson, was the form-
er Gudny Thorsteinson, eldest daugh-
ter of the late Vigfus and Gudridur
Thorsteinson who emigrated to Can-
ada in 1875 and over the years lived
successively at Winnipeg, Church-
bridge, Sask., Portage la Prairie, Big
Point, Gladstone, Beaver and Lundar,
Man. Mrs. Jackson was born at Akra-
nes, Iceland.

atoon was named the Thorvaldson
Building in September in honor of
Dr. Thorbergur Thorvaldson, inter-
nationally known scientist and first
dean of graduate studies at the uni-
versity, the seventh of major structures
so named after faculty members.
Dr. Thorvaldson joined the univer-
sity’s chemistry department at Sask-
atoon in 1914, and was made head of
the department five years later. In
1946 he was appointed dean of the
then newly created college of graduate
studies, a post he held until his retire-
ment in 1949 when lie was named dean
emeritus of graduate studies.
Dr. Thorvaldson, a member of the
university’s board of governors from
1952 to 1958, is internationally known
