LÖGBERG-HEIMSKRINGLA, FIMMTUDAGINN 23. JÚLl 1964 23 “Sixty year ago Lord Dufferin remarked on the devotion which you retained for your Icelandic culture. It is a very great culture, and it contains same of the noblest literature ever produced by mortal men. Far up in that lonely Iceland, girt by stormy seas, you developed a mode of life which, for simple hardihood and manly inde- pendence, has not often been paralleled in history. And you have produced great literature. For myslf I put the Icelandic Sagas among the chief works of the human genius. “There are two elements in your tradition, as reflected in the Sagas, on which I should like to say one word, for I hope that their spirit will never be forgotten. One is the belief in the reign of law. Everywhere in the Sagas you find that insisted upon. The old Icelanders were not only great warriors and adven- Compliments of . . . The second element in the Saga tradition is still greater. As I see it, it is the belief that truth and righteousness must be follewed for their own sake, quite independent of any material rewards . . . It was the creed of Christianity. It is the only creed which can put salt and iron and vigour into human life . . .” Now, when it is almost too late, we in Canada and the United States are beginning to appreciate the value and necessity of learning or re- learning a second or third language. This rests not only Compliments of . . . CHUDDS GARAGE LTD. YOUR DODGE - PLYMOUTH CHRYSLER DEALER AT GIMLI, MAN. Phone 642-5329 upon the cultural value of a study of another language. The speed of travel and com- municationa has forced us to realize that events in other lands may seriously affect our lives and the lives of our children. We speak of the current ideologies separating people but basisally the separation is one of language and culture. Our educators now urge us to learn another language so that we can understand, com- municate and trade with our world neigbours. I am sure that our universities will some day realize that it is not so necessary for all engineers, lawyers or doctors to learn French or German so that one in a thousand might perchance read scientific articles in these languages, as it is important that the universities provide a wide selection of languages based on a student’s free choice. New Horizons Now, ninety years after joining Confederation, Mani- toba has been enlarged and transformed from a predom- inantly Scottish, French and Metis settlement of farmers and fur-traders to its present size and development. Winni- peg is now a most cosmopoli- tan city. Every European nationality and others are re- presented among its citizens. One has only to be present at the Musical Festival, held in Winnipeg every year, or to at- tend performances of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra or the Royal Winni- peg Ballet or the Manitoba Theatre Centre to realize that, both on the stage and in the audience, the cultural life of Winnipeg and of Manitoba is being developed and sup- ported by individuals of many nationalities.
