covered the area west of the
Reykjanes Ridge between 57°N
and 64°N (Fig. 1).
The acoustic values indicate
higher densities in the western
part of the area surveyed (Fig. 2).
The acoustic estimate calculated
from the lcelandic survey am-
ounted to 1.3 mill. tons.
It is pointed out that the area
surveyed does not cover the
whole distribution area of the
oceanic redfish.
It is suggested that the Russian
acoustic estimate of 630.000 tons
in the area south of 57°N might
be added to the lcelandic estima-
te of 1.3 mill. tons.
The correlation between the
oceanic redfish and the temperat-
ure distribution is described (Figs.
3 and 4).
Some biological observations
are described and also the occur-
rens of S. mentella proper in
depths greater than 500 m.
Finally the commercial fishery on
oceanic redfish is commented
upon.

með andlit, sem rísa og sökkva á streymandi torgum.
Bylgjur stynja og deyja í fjöldanna flóði.
Þar finnast ei blóðdropar tveir, sem að öllu jafnast,
og eins og hvert brimtár og andvarp þitt, sem safnast
í öldustríðsins máttuga, drukknandi hljóði.
