SUMMARY
‘Sigfús Blöndal’s Use of Bjöm M. Ólsen’s Diaries as Lexical Sources’
Keywords: lexicon, lexicography, regional dialects, dialectal distribution of lexical
items, usage
This paper discusses some lexical items that Bjöm M. Ólsen collected all around the
country at the end of the 19th century. Sigfús Blöndal used this collection in his
Icelandic-Danish dictionary (1920-1924), and marked them as geographically
restricted without having the opportunity to verify the distribution. The author discus-
ses some examples from all parts of the country that made their way into the diction-
ary. She had checked the collections of the Institute of Lexicography at the University
of Iceland, both from written and spoken language. In most cases it was impossible
to decide if a word is restricted geographically or not, because there are not enough
examples. In addition, many of the words are not used at all anymore and cannot be
found in the collections. Hence we may never know whether these words actually had
a geographically restricted distribution or not. The study shows, however, that the
markings of geographical restriction in Sigfús Blöndal’s dictionaiy cannot be blindly
relied on.
