THE SOURCES OF SPECIMEN LEXICI RUNICI 49 script. The pages of the exemplar seem here to have been disordered: after U there is a page containing the words Þróske—Þyckia, and on the other side Þyckia—Þy occupying half a page, followed on the next page by the first appended entry Muta, containing the proverb “Mutan bleiter steininn” and the first of the two versions of the poem Trollaslagur which are printed in SLR. The next six pages are oc- cupied by the entry under Vijglysing, which contains the riddles from Króka-Refs Saga ch. 16, and a Latin explanation of them based on the mterpretations of King Haraldr in ch. 17, and a summary of the con- text. This entry also includes two proverbs, “Kiemur so bragde krók- ur móte” and “Betre er krokur enn kiellda”, both á propos the name of the hero of the saga. After this entry comes what should have been the first part of Þ, consisting of Þ—Þrekinn. This is the last page of the MS.21 The proper place for these two entries to be inserted under their appropriate letters in the body of the glossary is indicated in DG 55 by a sign, and they are found in their correct places in the printed book (pp. 88 and 134—139). Special attention is drawn to the Vijg- lysing entry in the list of sources in SLR, where it reads: “Krókarefs Saga: Vide literam V hujus Lexici, in voce Vyglysing.”22 Evidently these two entries were added to the glossary after the fair copy had been made, and probably after it had been sent to Copenhagen. In August, 1640, Jón Magnússon, Magnús’ successor at Laufás, and the writer of the fair copy of the glossary (the last part of which he had sent to Worm the year before), sent Worm a copy of the riddles from Króka-Refs Saga,23 probably including the ex- planations. The letter containing this material is now lost, but it may 21 That this disordering of the pages was present in the MS from which DG 55 was copied is shown by the fact that this last page has the first part of the letter Þ on the verso, and on the recto the end of the Vijglysing entry. This also shows that the appended entries must have been added to the glossary before DG 55 was copied from it. 22 In the list in DG 55 only the name of the saga is mentioned. Three other quotations from it were included in the original glossary of Magnús Ólafsson. 23 See Ole Worm’s Correspondence, 452. ÍSLENZK TUNGA 4
