These quotations apparently derive from a copy of the Codex
Regius of the Edda. At this time, this MS belonged to Brynjólfur
Sveinsson, who sent a paper copy of it to Stephanius in 1645.63 This
copy is now lost, but it was apparently the manuscript to which Guð-
mundur Andrésson had access for his study of the Eddic poems.
When Resen published Völuspá and Hávamál in his edition of Snorra
Edda of 1665, in which he used some of Guðmundur’s commentaries,
his text was evidently based on the same paper MS. But by the time
of this publication, the Codex Regius itself was already in Denmark,
and the text of the poems was corrected from the vellum. But Resen’s
text of Hávamál still contains some deviations from the Codex Regius
which probably derive from the copy used by Guðmundur.04 Some
of these variants correspond with the readings of the quotations in
SLR, showing that these quotations are also taken from Stephanius’
copy of the Codex Regius. These readings from Resen’s Edda are
given below.
There are also many quotations from tliese two poems in LI, which
are also taken from the same paper MS, and many of these correspond
to the quotations in SLR. These similarities are noted below.
In the second edition of Lileratura Runica (1651), Worm included
several quotations from Völuspá and Hávamál, which are also taken
from the same copy as was used by Guðmundur. None of the passages
quoted, however, correspond to the quotations in SLR.05
From Völuspá:
*7 Ar: Ar var allda þa Ymir bygde (v. 3). — So LI p. 15, s. v. iir: “Ar var allda
þa ecki var / item ár var allda þá er imer bigde.”
*13 Badmur: Hulin har Badmur huijtum aure (v. 19). — Hulin does not corre-
spond to anything in the Codex Rcgius, and must be the result of some
misunderstanding. LI p. 20, s. v. Ausa: “Ask vert eg standa / heiter ygdrasil
/ hár tadmur / ausin / hvitum auri.”
