Two weeks ago, the third All Tomor-
row’s Parties festival at the former
NATO base in Keflavík rocked a large
part of our world. Some of our favourite
moments included the cult-like post-
rock of Godspeed You! Black Emper-
or, the strange lute-proggers Xylouris
White chanting mantras in tongues,
and The Field blasting hypnotic ambient
techno for way too many people at the
end of Friday night.
In the Icelandic department, Pink Street
Boys created a mosh pit in a movie the-
ater and Kiasmos released a beast bass
with a neo-classical twist right at the end
of the festival in Atlantic Studios. While
not a highlight, it was also pretty weird
when an absolutely wasted gentleman at
the Officers’ Club pulled out a fire ex-
tinguisher during a great DJ set, turning
the club into what looked like Baghdad
in three seconds, and leaving the venue
out of action for the rest of the weekend.
But our real highlights came in the form
of one old act, and one brand-new. The
first arrived on Thursday in the form of
leather lizard and grandfather of punk,
Iggy Pop. His voice hasn’t aged at all,
and he plowed through “The Passenger”
and “Lust for Life” with the hormonal
rage of a horny teenager. Every single
person in Atlantic Studios that night was
his dog.
The second highlight came late on Sat-
urday night at the sit-down venue An-
drew’s Theater. The experimental rap trio
Clipping kept the whole venue standing
and jumping to abstract noise beats and
light-speed rapping—more than reminis-
cent of Andre 3000 and Saul Williams.
We sincerely hope for the continuation
of the festival since it was an immense
all-around musical joyride.
On to the next big event of the month.
LungA festival is held in the east of Ice-
land in Seyðisfjörður from July 12-19. The
festival will end with a grand concert on
July 18 with an all-star lineup of Sykur,
Grísalappalísa, Reykjavíkurdætur,
dj. flugvél og geimskip, and Sturla
Atlas—as well as the first ever concert
from the mighty and mysterious Gangly,
whose videos we premiered on our site
straum.is back in December.
Speaking of mysterious acts, we've been
listening to a curious EP that got mailed
to us this week, called 'Vald' (“power”),
by a band of the same name. It’s a jazz-
themed electronic album influenced (in
the act's own words) by Erik Satie and
Jon Hopkins. It’s a really interesting
take on the genre—but don’t just take
