“'People are on our side,’ she says. ‘They know that it's
important. They know it's not about 'sluttiness.' It's
about your right not to be sexually violated.’ It seems
that any problem with the verbiage has faded into the
background, and has made room for an open discourse
on the issues of sexual assault and violence—with the
citizens and government decidedly on board.”
We talk to the organisers of Slutwalk about
their goals for this years gathering. What are we
marching for?
“A sparkly pink linoleum floor cluttered with pairs
of worn-in Doc Martens and clunky platform shoes
marks the entrance to Catherine Côté’s home. The
only custom 3D nail artist in Reykjavík, Catherine
runs her studio, Rainbow Nails, out of her downstairs
Skeggjagata flat.”
We entered the technicolour world of
Reykjavík’s only custom nail artist, Catherine
Côte, and talked to her about Icelandic style.
“But as much as different places might shape
the process of making music, it’s individuals, life
experiences and relationships that lie at the core of
Farao’s subject matter. ‘The new songs are still about
loss—but no longer about mourning,’ Kari explains.
‘It’s that mix of desperately wanting something,
whilst not really caring if you actually get it. Like an...
apathetic desperation.”
Farao’s music is dark and seductive. What drives
her unique sound? What’s her inspiration?
“The uproar is warranted, of course, because
these spaces are about more than just protecting
bars or small venues. These businesses transcend
economic value by sustaining a community of
people ripe with creativity and entrepreneurial
f lair, crucial elements for sustaining the vibrancy
and culture of the urban centre.”
Why are all of our music venues closing?
