The glacier cap Snæfellsjökull (in tlie centre). The ivhite zone arround ihe glacier shows the recession of the margin from 1910 to 1957. The areal of the glacier cap has been reduced from 22 km2 to 11 km2 in the same period. JON EYTHORSSON: Variation of Iceland Glaciers 1931 - 1960 In the following Tables (p. 32—33) are col- lected the yearly variations of outlet glaciers as far as observed in the period 1931/60. Similar Table was published in The Journal of Glacio- logy, 1949, for the period 1931/47. The periocl 1931 /60 shows a consiclerable rise of temperature ol' the air in Iceland as compared with the period 1901/30 and accordingly the glaciers have thinned and shrumped in. Certain advances that have, however, occurred are dif- ficult to explain climatologically. Thus the Leirufjorcl Glacier advanced 999 meters 1939/42, the glacier in Kaldalon 187 m 1936/38 and the Reykjarfjorcl glacier 750 m 1934/36. Since then they have been retreating again. An interesting fact is that these same glaciers had a sudden ad- vance lOOyears ago between 1837 and 1847.Never- theless the glacier cap itself lias been thinning so that the nunatak Reydarbunga that became just visible in the first decade of this century and was still only 1—2 m high in 1931 has now risen to 100 m above the surface of the snow.
