Yfirlit
I þessum kafla eru birtar töflur um starfandi fólk (16-74 ára).
Töfluffamsetningin er í 11 undirköflum, þar sem starfandi fólk
er skoðað frá ýmsum hliðum, svo sem með tilliti til menntunar,
hjúskaparstéttar, atvinnustéttar, atvinnugreina, vinnutíma,
aukastarfa og fleira. Hér á eftir verður getið nokkurra athyglis-
verðra upplýsinga sem fram koma í kaflanum. Þá er gerð grein
fyrir helstu hugtökum og aðferðum sem varða töflur í þessum
kafla.
Starfandifólkifjölgaðium5.100manns 1991-1997 eðaúr
136.900 í 142.000. Milli áranna 1996 og 1997 mældist engin
aukning á fjölda starfandi. A árunum 1991-1997 fækkaði
starfandi fólki utan höfuðborgarsvæðisins um 2.500 manns
en fjölgaði á höfuðborgarsvæðinu um 7.600. Breytingar
þessar á fjölda starfandi héldust hins vegar nokkum veginn í
hendur við mannfjölda- og búsetuþróun þannig að hlutfall
starfandi af mannfjöldanum 1997 var 77,9% miðað við 79%
árið 1991. Þetta em talsvert hærri hlutfoll en á ámnum 1993-
1994 þegar hlutfall starfandi var innan við 77%.
Synopsis
This chapter presents tables about the employed (aged 16-
74). The tables are presented in nine sections which examine
the employed from various angles, such as education, marital
status, employment status, economic activity, working hours,
second job, etc. The following are some of the highlights of
that chapter. The principal concepts and methods relating to
the tables in this chapter are also outlined.
The number of employed increased by 5,100 over the
period 1991-1997, from 136,900 to 142,000. No increase in
the number of people at work was measured between 1996
and 1997. Over the period 1991-1997 there was a decrease
of 2,500 in the number of employed outside the capital area,
but an increase in the capital area of 7,600. These changes in
the number of employed broadly corresponded to population
and residence trends, whereby the employed accounted for
77.9%ofthepopulationin 1997 comparedwith79%in 1991.
This is a considerably larger proportion than over the period
1993-1994, when it was less than 77%.

starfandi úr 87.400 í 93.600 manns eða um 7%. í iðnaði
fjölgaði starfandi lítillega á tímabilinu en starfandi fækkaði
í landbúnaði og sjávarútvegi um 1.700 manns.
The increase in the number of employed over the period
1991-1997 was almost entirely confmed to service industries,
where there was a growth of 7%, from 87,400 to 93,600.
There was a slight increase in the number of employed in
manifacturing but in acriculture and fisheries the number fell
by 1,700 overthis period.
