INTRODUCTION
As well as correcting some of A’s figures, Hånd B has also
written the following dates: 520, 530, 540, 600, 680, 690, 700,
710, 720, 730, Dcclxxxx, 800, 809, 810, 820, 824, 830, 840,
850, 860, 865, 869, 870, 871, 872, 880, 886-8, 890, 899, 900,
910, 918, 920, 930, 938, 940, 950, 959, 961, 962, 964, 969,
970, 980-4, 987, 989-91, 996, 997. 999 (belongs only to the
first two sentences of the annals’ entry for 1000), 1000 (belongs
to the remainder of the entry for 1000 and to that for 1001),
1001-7. After this Hånd B does not appear again.—We may
further observe that in all probability it was Hånd B who wrote
the following marginal notes: over the year 950, “rangt datum”;
beside the entry for 976, the “grenska” of the text is emended
to “grafelldz”.
Hånd C follows sometimes the dates of the original, some-
times the corrected forms of Hånd B; the early dates in this
hånd are as follows (unless otherwise indicated the date is the
same as the annals’) : 419, 423-5> 611, 614, 629, 652, 810-13,
824 (= B), 835, 836 (=B), 838 (=B), 845 (=B), 848
(=B), 858 (=B), 869, 872, 897 (=B), 1006, ioioff.
As remarked by Storm1 * * it is probable that Hånd B is AJ’s
hånd, though this cannot be decided with complete certainty. It
is at any rate demonstrable that AJ often used the corrected
dates in his writings (see e.g. I 1756, 19621, 20021 marg., 2057),
while on other occasions he gives the uncorrected dates, even
though these have in faet been corrected in Flat. (see I 17712,
21 o33, 2211’20). The natural conclusion is that AJ corrected the
dates when he was working at Supplementum; he must have ex-
cerpted the unamended dates before he made his corrections,
unless they are mere slips. The dates written by Hånd A must
therefore have been in the annals when Flat. came to AJ on
loan; he then set himself to correct the figures, following Gott-
skålksannall, and this may have caused some inconsistency in his
own dating.
At the time when AJ was writing his historical works, Flat.
was owned by the farmer, Jon Bjornsson in Flatey in BreiSa-
1 Storm’s division of the corrections between the two hånds, B and C, is incor-
rect; my division above is based on a new examination of the manuscript in the
autumn of 1952.
