RERUM DANICARUM FRAGMENTA

descended from him. It is therefore with a fair degree of likeli-
hood that we can conclude that AJ got most of this material
from his manuscript of Skjgld., which began again with fvarr
viSfaSmi or thereabouts. The faet that AJ gives no more detailed
accounts of the exploits of these kings does not prove the con-
trary, because, as we have said, he did not look on them as
Danish kings.

3551—35931 Is also found for the most part in a section of Olåfs
saga Tryggvasonar, Fms. I 106-114; Flat. I 94-8, though with
certain differences; see the following notes. Olrik (Aarb. 1894,
pp. 149-52) concluded that AJ had used on the one hånd Flat-
eyjarbåk, supplemented by information in Flateyjarannåll, and
on the other a second manuscript which was supposed to contain
a history of Denmark and to have been a source for OTr, cf.
Introduction, pp. 114—15 above. On the material which comes
from neither OTr nor Flateyjarannåll, see notes to I 35512-15,
3566~7, 35723, 35829-30 , 3 5 94-7. Most of the material could have
come from OTr in the manuscript AM 53 fol., and there is a
certain amount which could not possibly have come from Flat.
(see notes to I 35512-15, 35516, 35615, 35910-13, 35915). In other
instances AJ agrees with Flat. against AM 53 fol. (see notes to
I 35525) 35534) 35620>21*21-22, 35917). Two explanations are pos-
sible: either AJ got this material from Flat., which in that case
he must have used along with AM 53 fol.; or, if that is not the
case, then he got it from a third source, probably Skjgld.

Gudefridus Flat. I 94; Gudraudr Flateyjarannåll s. a. 810. AJ’s
forms indicate that he used a source with the reading Godefridus
(i.e. not Flat.) and Flateyjarannåll.
